New Year's Reception 2007

An unprecedented number of 130 members and non-members attended the New Year’s Reception last friday. With lots of oliebollen, bitterballen, Gouda and other free food and drinks, everybody had a good time. Never before was the Heineken totally sold out towards the end of the reception. Ages ranged from 0 to 93 and it was good to see that all sorts of DutChicagoans are represented within the club. Many thanks go to Lily Pasaribu and Myra Noll and all others who helped make this year’s kick-off a great succes!

Sinterklaas 2006

While there was much ado about the Pieten before the event, the event itself was a huge success! While outside the snow was totally in line with the legend, inside a great number of children with their parents were busy making mijters, eating speculaas and drinking hot cocoa. After a while, Sint came into the room with his colorful Pieten. A lot of children had been following the Sinterklaasjournaal before the event on the internet, where the Pieten were also covered in many bright colors due to the fact that Sinterklaas’ boat sailed through the rainbow. So no surprises here! Every child had great fun and got to sit on Sinterklaas’ lap or hand him a selfmade drawing. After that, the children could pick up their presents. Many thanks to all people who helped with this event.

Marathon Training Update 1

Seven more weeks of training until the Chicago Marathon. The most difficult ones. Most Dutch Runners follow the trainingschedule of Hal Higdon (www.halhigdon.com) en the distances in this period go up to 50 miles. That is almost equal to from down Chicago to the state border of Wisconsin (Winthrop Harbor). Also the Dutchrunners run longruns of 20 miles, which is almost from down town to Downers Grove. With this in mind there is even more reasons to support the runners and give them a big hand if you see them running.

On March 4, 2006, a whole group of speedskating enthusiasts made their way over to the Pettit National Ice Center for some speedskating, hot chocolate and erwtensoep . . . koek en zopie.   The ice was perfect, everyone managed to get stamps from each of the 11 cities on the elfstedentocht (but no "kruisje" because there was no "klunen").
