The Flavors of Amsterdam

FLORENCE FABRICANT

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up the Hudson River on the Half Moon, a model of a colonial Dutch village will be created in Bowling Green Park , Broadway and Whitehall Streets, from Sept. 4 to 14.

The village will contain 12 traditional houses, a windmill and a greenhouse and be open, free, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Dutch food products will be available for sampling and purchase and there will be culinary workshops as well as other activities during the day.

From Sept. 5 to 20 there will be $24 menus (the amount in Dutch guilders that was paid for the island of Manhattan) at restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn for a Nieuw Amsterdam restaurant week promotion sponsored by the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Trade. A list of the participating restaurants is at www.tastenewamsterdam.com.

On Sept. 10, Slow Food chapters in New York and Amsterdam will participate by eating oysters and drinking beer. In New York , the two will be served at Jimmy's No. 43, 43 East Seventh Street , from 7 to 9 p.m., and a simulcast from Amsterdam is planned. Admission, $5 at the door, is a donation to Slow Food. Oysters from local producers will cost $4 for three, benefiting the Peconic Land Trust. Ommegang beer will be $5 a glass. Other beers will be $6 to $12 a glass.
